Event Styling Trends: What’s Capturing Imaginations in the 2025/2026 Season

At HQ New Zealand, our 25 years of experience allows us to see how event aesthetics evolve. This season, we have seen a fascinating shift toward high-contrast textures while the classic themes are still proving classic. Whether you are planning an intimate incentive or a large-scale conference, these top trends from our recent Queenstown and Auckland programmes offer plenty of inspiration.

1. Mirror & Disco: Reflective Modernity

The standout trend this year is the “Reflective Look.” We are pairing shiny silver surfaces and disco elements with soft, fresh florals. This look thrives on bold, trendy accents—think electric blues and vibrant, light moss greens. The juxtaposition of hard, reflective surfaces with delicate nature creates a sophisticated, high-energy atmosphere perfect for gala dinners.

2. Elevated Bohemian Chic

The rustic-bohemian aesthetic remains a favourite for its versatility. We are seeing a return to dried florals, macramé hangings, and earthy textures. This theme scales up well for a rustic and warm event look, but also is particularly effective for those looking to achieve a sophisticated yet minimalist look and feel. A few well-placed, simplified pieces can help elevate an experience without killing the budget.

3. Enchanted Gardens & Whimsical Wonders

For clients wanting a sense of “wow,” the enchanted garden theme is delivering. We use oversized elements to create impact—think massive floral arches and larger-than-life blooms. This theme often incorporates whimsical characters and immersive lighting to transport guests into a magical, otherworldly setting.

4. The Timeless Classics:

Winter Wonderland

In Queenstown, some themes are perennial for a reason. Winter Wonderland continues to provide high impact, leaning into our stunning alpine environment. To truly elevate the experience, we specialise in creating “wow” moments through large-scale, custom-built features. We have previously designed and delivered spectacular focal points, including a whimsical, three-metre-high snowman and carved, bespoke ice installations.

Gold Rush

Similarly, many clients choose to celebrate the region’s heritage with a Gold Rush theme, utilising our extensive range of rustic props to recreate the atmosphere of the 1860s Otago goldfields. We’ve even had clients lean into this theme deeper with interactive elements such as Gold Rush-style heists, gold panning activities and Buckingham Belle Saloon dancers.

5. Meaningful Māori Culture

We are seeing a beautiful trend toward deeper cultural appreciation. Rather than just a performative element, clients are seeking an educational and more meaningful experience with Māori culture. Recent event examples include:

Pounamu (Greenstone) presented as part of an immersive gift station where, upon arrival at the event, guests learnt about the significance of stone, watched the carving and the hand-tying of the necklace, and finally it was blessed for the receipient/wearer.

Māori Whakataukī (Proverbs) integrated into individual place settings for a dinner, or received as part of a healing spa treatment.

Traditional Māori Welcomes to open formal proceedings, grounding the event and officially welcoming the manuhuri (visitors) with karakia (blessings), waiata (song), poi and haka (cultural dance).

Indigenous Artists and Kamatua (cultural elders) sharing legends and lessons of the people of Aotearoa New Zealand through storytelling, dance, sand art and song.
