Culture and Connection in the North Island
Key Objectives
A global corporation brought one of its regional sales teams to New Zealand with a multi-layered mission: to connect with the brand’s global vision, integrate with their New Zealand head office teams, and bond deeply with each other.
The primary objective was to weave high-energy team bonding and pristine natural landscapes with authentic Māori culture (manaakitanga). Following an initial two-day corporate session at their head office in Auckland, the client required a seamless, high-impact transition to Rotorua. They needed a full-service itinerary that balanced deep cultural immersion, personalised activity options, and premium relaxation.
Impact
HQNZ managed the end-to-end logistics, transport, and program creation, transforming this regional gathering into a masterclass in destination management.
The journey began with a scenic coach transfer from Auckland to Rotorua, arriving at the geothermal heart of the North Island. To ground the team in the local environment, guests experienced a powerful, traditional pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) at Rotowhio Marae. A highlight of the connection was seeing the group’s chosen leader step forward to respectfully accept the traditional challenge (taki) from the Māori warrior—setting an inspiring tone for the days ahead.
After a relaxed welcome dinner at the beautiful Terrace Kitchen right by their accommodation, the next day offered tailored flexibility. HQ curated three distinct morning activity tracks to suit different energy levels:
- Nature: A serene treetop canopy walk combined with a magical glowworm habitat tour.
- Exploration: A guided e-biking tour through the Redwoods forest loop, concluding with a truly unique Shinny-dipping experience.
- Adrenaline: Thrilling white-water rafting down Rotorua’s famous rushing rivers.
The team reunited in the afternoon for exclusive, indigenous-inspired geothermal bathing at the world-class Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa. That evening, the focus shifted to pure fun and camaraderie with competitive luging at Skyline Rotorua, followed by a sumptuous dinner at the Stratosfare Restaurant overlooking the city lights.
The program concluded perfectly on the final day with an exclusive boat charter across the historic waters of Lake Tarawera, complete with a soak at a hidden geothermal hot water beach. The feedback was outstanding, with international guests marvelling at the inspiring natural scenery and the genuine warmth of classic Kiwi hospitality alongside a strong desire to return to New Zealand.
